I can't decide if I prefer the 80s design over the 70s.

Everytime I see Scirocco, I cannot get that little jingle that James May did for their fictitious VW commercial
Mr. Ontop, No Strokes, No Smokes...Goes Fast.

Online isn't bad but not locally, any parts cars will be rusted.

'70s. I had such a crush on those cars back in the day. I still do.

I have an '85. They're basically a hybrid between the Mk1 and Mk2 Golf/Rabbit/Jetta, so mechanical parts are no problem at all. The trim, both interior and exterior, is specific to the Scirocco, though, and can be close to unobtanium in some cases.

I have an '85 project car that I'm hoping to get on the road this summer. I honestly think that I prefer the look of the original '70s design, but in either form, they're fantastic cars – stylish, remarkably practical (although the back seat is useless), and thoroughly entertaining to drive.
"Only needs" or not, that's definitely a nice price. Mechanically, the Scirocco is dead simple (with the possible exception of the fuel injection, but that's usually pretty reliable), and they share most of their oily bits with the Mk1 and Mk2 Rabbit/Golf/Jetta. The tough part is the cosmetic stuff, which is Scirocco-specific and often hard to find. I made the mistake of buying a mechanically-perfect car (only 32,000 miles!) that has some major cosmetic issues. This one seems like just the opposite – a clean, solid car that needs just a bit of simple mechanical work. A clutch job on any FWD car isn't really for the faint of heart, but it's still not the end of the world, and if that and a brake job is all it really needs (the fuel pump and battery are trivial, really), it's a hell of a good deal.
